What is the Prototype Bamboo Epic Home?
We need your help to prototype a new Epic Home design using bamboo! Over three days in the 29th - 31st July we will build a part of this new design to test out the viability of Bamboo as a construction material to fit within our build processes and experience.
We would be covering the basics of building with bamboo at the start of the 3 day period, with most of our time thereafter being spent on building this prototype bamboo house.
Your feedback from this build will then help the designers refine the design as we track towards an internal goal of building the first actual bamboo Epic Homes in December 2022!
For that to happen, we have gotten the help of the DB3 Team, SEAD and Ewe Jin Low’s leadership (from betterbamboobuildings.com or on Instagram @ewejinlow) to come up with a new design and provide this workshop. Now we need your help & experience as core team members to help build, validate and refine this very design during this 3 day workshop.
Why Bamboo?
Over the past year and a half, Epic has been working with various experts to set up a sustainable treated bamboo pole industry in the Orang Asli communities as a form of economic empowerment.
We’ve decided to take a serious step into making bamboo the ideal way forward for epic homes as a construction material. Bamboo is a super material with many positive values given its suitability to our climate, cost effectiveness (compared to the volatile steel prices), positive environmental impact and potential for it to improve livelihoods of the OA themselves.
Important Details below:

FAQ
1.Are we staying in accommodation over the three days?
Nope, since it is within the city each day, we will go back to our own homes and meet fresh at the location the next day.
2. How is this workshop different from the last bamboo workshop with SEAD?
The previous workshop does share similarities in terms of learning the basics of building with bamboo but this should also be treated as a prototyping workshop where we want to get feedback from you, as core team members, to validate and refine the buildability of this new bamboo house.
Exploring the use of a sustainable construction material in Bamboo to prototype a new Epic Home. This workshop works towards training and familiarising people with the material as well as the viability of the design of the home. The impact of this mission can lead to further and effective use of bamboo in construction of homes.

I've always like to make/build stuff with my hands, usually involving only small scale models/art pieces & basic tools like stationaries. Which is why I don't own a pair of "seasoned" hands, but I don't mind getting them seasoned as I join more builds. I've had a few cuts on my hands, some minor, and one or two deep ones, but it ain't stopping me from wanting to build. That was how impactful the mission was to me. I'm thankful for all the guidance that the epic team has given me especially when using tools that I'm not familiar with. SEAD & Ewe Jin have been great mentors & advisors along the way. I can't wait to see more development on bamboo housing through this collaboration. It was a pleasure.

Fast-paced learning and intentional prototyping workshop. It was a rare opportunity to work with people who are passionate about bamboo as a sustainable building material in Malaysia. The programme was well-designed: an introductory session to bamboo, design development walk-throughs, building session (3 small groups working simultaneously), and immediate feedback session with other builders. We also put to practice specific skills such as identifying bamboo, lashing and jointing techniques etc. It is an exciting journey as we craft out a brand-new modular housing design using bamboo.
