As part of our goal of increasing empowerment and self-reliance, we offer English language courses for adults in the various refugee communities. These classes take place at the MSRI Community Center, usually once or twice a week per level. Our scheduling is relatively flexible depending on the availability of our volunteers, but normally the classes take place Monday through Thursday from 10am-12pm.
Classes usually have around 10 to 15 participants, and the levels start at absolute beginner to intermediate. We also offer an IELTS preparation course, and a conversational English class. Teachers must have some experience, and be willing to commit to a minimum of 3 months of work.
In addition to volunteering at the MSRI Community Center, we also have opportunities to give classes in other community centers around Kuala Lumpur like the Somali Community Center, or the Afghan Community Center, among others. Please inquire for further details!
The MSRI Community Centre focuses on providing emergency support and livelihood programmes for our refugee and asylum seeker community members. As a transit country, refugees move to Malaysia with the intention of being resettled elsewhere, but the time consuming process leaves some in limbo for many years. Our goal is to empower and help them attain self-relience during their time here by offering a safe space where they can continue to learn, enhance, and expose their skills.
