A Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is a common name for non-profit animal welfare organizations around the world. All SPCAs around the world are independent of one another and are not affiliated in any way. Every SPCA has their own governing policies, financial reports, board of directors, and organizational goals.
Founded in 1958, SPCA Selangor is an animal welfare organisation based in Ampang Jaya, Selangor. The aim of the SPCA is to protect defenseless animals and to alleviate their suffering. They provide an adoption program, investigation of cruelty reports, humane education, assistance to community animal caregivers and run a dedicated, low-cost spay/ neuter clinic. They also lobby the Government and local municipalities for humane treatment of animals and harsher penalties for perpetrators of crimes against animals.
SPCA Selangor is looking at ways of improving their ERA Centre (Education, Rehabilitation & Adoption) located in Ampang by making it more animal-friendly. Their centre has a range of facilities primarily for dogs & cats, such as cat aviaries, dog kennels, and dog outdoor park. Apart from pets being brought in or saved, it is common for their compound to get ‘adopted’ by wandering outside cats who make the centre their home. SPCA imagines the ERA Centre to be a integration of human, cats and dogs living harmoniously together.
In conjunction with Worlds Pet Day at end of September, SPCA Selangor is looking to come up with a type of community build event. One of the initial idea’s SPCA has is improving the Cattery space. Adding more playscapes and habitable spaces for its feline friends.
It would be up to designers to research and come up with an idea of how to make the ERA Centre more cat-friendly.
Our design for the cattery and reception installations build upon our findings on SPCA’s feline occupants and the humans that care for them. Taking the idea of modular cat-friendly furniture, we have designed the components to be customisable and to adapt to the changing needs of our furry friends without compromising on the practical aspect of constant maintenance.
There are 6 people in the Cattery design team (2 with design experience and 4 without) all brought together by their love for cats, design thinking, and doing a little good for the community. Over a 2-day weekend, the team set out to re-think the design of the current cattery and reception area at SPCA through rapid ideation and prototyping, which included an SPCA tour and immersion therapy with the cat clients themselves.

Schedule
Day 1 (22nd Sept 2017) at EPIC Collective @ Bandar Sunway, 10.00am - 5.00pm
Day 2 (23rd Sept 2017) at EPIC Collective @ Bandar Sunway, 10.00am - 5.00pm
Day 3 (24th Sept 2017) at SPCA Selangor @ Ampang, 10.00am - 5.00pm
What you'll be doing
On the first two days at EPIC Collective, you will be completing the installations as per design. You will be led by one specialist each day so they will brief you on how to do it.
On the third day, you will be required to get to SPCA Selangor to complete assembling the installation on site as per design.
For whichever day you will be attending, please do read through the design brief thoroughly for a better idea on what you'll need to complete at the end of the 3 day build.
You will have helped SPCA create a more habitable yet playful space for the cats as well as provide ideas for their future when they are ready to expand. By involving yourself in this build, you are truly showing the response-able attitude towards pets and demonstrate what can be done with a few people and some tools. You would also be demonstrating the heart of service by taking your long weekend out to spend some time getting to know new people and learning a few possibly new skills to apply in the future.
